    Hi

If it's been stood that long, the first thing I'd put in there is a semi-synthetic 10w-40, and give it a bit of use. That should clear any old oil out of the system.

Is the car modified and what's it going to get used for when it's ready?

    Cheers

Once I have got it all ready it will be for the occasional road use maybe modified to stage 1 nothing to major.

It won't be getting used as a daily once it is finished.

    When it's ready go for a 5w-40

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

I’ve got an S15 and want to prolong the life of the box...after reading a few horror stories of boxes giving up etc and also the general rule that the boxes in s bodies aren’t the strongest I want to protect mine the best way I can.

I want to be able to have a play and not worry about the box.

    I’m torn between these -

    Redline Heavy ShockProof 75w140

    Redline Light Weight ShockProof 75w90

    Redline Synthetic Manual Transmission 90 MT90 75W-90

Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90

I have also read and seen that some people have used some mega thick stuff!

    Comma 85W-140

    Comma 85W-170

Just to clear some things up also, (correct me if I’m wrong) the first number is to do with how the oil performs at cold temperatures isn’t it? How thick it is? The second number is how it performs at high temperatures? So an 85W based oil would offer better protection than the 75W during cold times and when the box isn’t warmed up? and the 140 based would offer better protection than the 90 at higher temperatures i.e racing, drifting?

How would these be on the road with every day driving? Hard notchy gear changes?

Out of all of the above what would you recommend?

    Any advice would be great!

Out of those, I'd go for the Lightweight Shockproof. The Heavy is a bit thick, the MT90 is a very good oil, but the Shockproof is better for a lot of drifted cars, the Syn 5 is better in diffs than a lot of gearboxes and both of those Comma oils are too thick.

Thicker oils don't necessarily protect better, you want ones that are the right viscosity.

    Hi Tim,

Any recommendations for a BMW E34 540i with the Getrag S6S 420 G 6-speed manual. Struggling to find much information online as to which oil to use (seems like the auto is the more common box for these), I think it's the same box the e39 540 and the e39 M5 uses though?

The car is used for daily driving, track and towing.

    Cheers,

    Dunc.

    Hi Dunc

I don't have any details listed for it, but I'd go for a manual transmission fluid as that's what getrags from then used and the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid are very good choices. The Millers EP 75w-80 is a good cheaper alternative

The lightweight is GL-5 which isnt recommended for our boxes? Think MT90 would be best as its a GL-4..

Most good quality GL5 oils are fine to use in GL4 boxes, it's only dodgy ones with old fashioned additives and ones that are designed as diff oils that don't really work.

Just been looking on your site and entered my car details to see what oils, filters etc came up.

What's the difference between Millers XFS and Millers XSS? Or should I go with the Fuchs Supersyn.

    Cheers

    Hi Jay

XSS is semi-synthetic, XFS is fully synthetic.

With the deal on the XFS at the moment, I'd go for that over the SUpersyn. They are both similar oils, but the Millers is better value with the offer.

    Cheers

Hey oilman, what would you recommend for an 08 plate fn2 civic type r? Just regular road use, I'm not familiar with the grade Honda use but would like to stick to it. Thanks.

0w30 is whhat honda put in the type r mate, there are people I know use 5w-40 or 0w-40 synthetic, even 5w-30 I used 5w40 in my old one was fine . 0w30 seems to burn off much quicker had to top mine almost from the bottom 4 times in 8k miles

Pegliobagli has it spot on, they aren't overly fussy. 0w-30 (or even 0w-20) is what Honda send them out of the factory with, but if you like vtec, it tends to drink those grades at a high rate. 5w-40 is the best if you like to put your foot down, 0w-30 for fuel economy (although it makes very little difference).

Thanks chris and Tim, looks like I may as well go with the same oil as the s15 5w40 synthetic. At least that way I'll always have the right stuff for top ups... Cheers.

Sod's law, although you could top up with a drop of another 75w-90 or 80w-90, that small an amount won't matter.

    Hi

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and here are the ones we have.

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

    It takes 2.4l.

    Cheers
