Oil advise for a M60B40 aka BMW e34 540 engine

High mileage, but silent, great compression and made 298bhp on dyno so still nice and healthy.

    currently ran on 10w40 semi.

after a few hard laps of drifting Snetterton in full attack mode my oil got to 120* and pressure drop RIGHT down!!

recommend oil cooler, or different oil?

Thanks for the courtesy of a reply, much obliged.

It is really very very irritating just how difficult it is to identify what sort of oil is what wth the manufacturers wilfully obscuring the facts

Thank the lord for the clear and open explanations on your website.

Will stick to the Gulf competition you presently have on special offer
Pointless getting second rate for the sake of saving a fiver.

I would stick with a 10w-40, but go for a better one, a full synthetic.

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. Fitting a cooler to get the oil down to around 100C would be good too.

    Cheers

The Gulf oils are a bargain considering how good they are.

More and more manufacturers are actually giving away clues to the make up of the oil now. Things like HC and Technosynthese are appearing on the labels. It also seems that oils packaged for mainland Europe have more accurate labelling in terms of what the oil is made of.

    Cheers

With that level of modifications, a 10w-50 is a more sensible idea

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Any of the 75w-140 or 80w-140s will be fine for you.

Hey Opie, I'm looking for some new oil for my 180sx SR20DET redtop. Its almoust stock (FMIC, HKS exhaust, 247bhp).
Would Gulf Competition 10w-40 racing engine oil (10w40) be a good choice? It's mostly a daily driver, but also for some drifting fun time to time.

And what oil should i use for my gearbox ?

I'd go for the Gulf 5w-40 as it's mainly a daily driver, it will give better cold start protection.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

    Cheers
