Stripped very back thread on ex manifold side of head, what now?

Have stripped the very last thread (closest to bulkhead) on the head when putting the exhaust manifold on, now as expected its blowing.

What do I do now? Is there anyway I can get the thread re-tapped without having to remove the head?

Really don't need this as its already taken me 7 months to get this far with the car and im sooooo close to having it finished

I would guess a Helicoil would be the answer. Call a local garage and get the number for the chap they use (usually there is a local expert who does everybody's) and then call him, and ask his opinion, and if he can do it in situ. You'll have to remove as much as you can around it for certain though.

Is it something worth attempting myself or best leaving to someone that knows what they are doing?

Adam if you can be bothered doing it give it to karl and he will sort it for you. It happened to me with my first s13 so I took the whole stud out and used a bolt and it was spot on.

Have you stripped the thread on the stud or the thread in the head that the stud goes into? I read it as the thread inside the head.

Pretty sure its the thread in the alloy head thats gone....

The problem with the one thats gone is room. not sure if you can get much access with a drill / tool to put a helicoil in.

Adam, this is certainly not something you should attempt - especially when you read through the link BBB posted about helicoils, and the close tollerances in the head.

Yes its the thread that the stud goes into. If theres a way I can get it done without having to take the engine apart then i'll go for that because I really don't want to be taking it all apart.

I don't mind having a go at most things myself but I think removing the head is far beyond my capabilities

    Hahaha!

Seriously though, I might speak to the engieneer guy that walks past when I'm working on the car, as he's offered to help a different time I got a bit stuck with something. Maybe he might know a trick or two for working in the very small space. If not, then what

...if you can get the tools in there to drill / retap a thread, then the head is going to have to come off...

Personally, Id give it to a garage - it should drive OK, a blowing manifold gasket isnt going to do any harm..

I don't get it, If you can get the tools in there with the head on then why would it need to come off?

How much is a garage going to charge for head removal, tapping the thread, and refitting it? I might aswell put a metal gasket whilst i'm at it too?
