I'll have a proper read through them when I'm home from work, don't want to skive too much incase I get caught
To be honest if the rest of the engine is fine I would be tempted to drop the engien and box out as a lump and then helicoil it yourself. The kits are about £30 and if you leave the manifold on when you drill it it will act as a guide to keep the drill bit striaght
Give it to karl and he will sort it mate trust me. Saves you getting your hands dirty. If you want to wait a week I am off then I would do it for you.
edit: need to read more carefully...
This situation reminds of when I did the very same thing but on a S12 did manage a good temp fix using a bolt and washers then bought one of these Helicoil kits which came with a slightly over size drill bit a tap and a Helicoil tool, however there was nt enough room to get my drill in so I hired one of these side drill/angle drills to get in,job was quite easy then.
All depends how brave and confident you are,but does seem extreme to start whipping the head and turbo off plus the added expense if you re paying a garage.
I had an idea this weekend!
What about, instead of removing the head, just lifting out the engine and gearbox?
I've no idea at all about removing the head and don't fancy trying it to be honest, I know how to get most of the engine and gearbox out.
So could I lift the engine and box to above the engine bay to the point where theres enough room to helicoil the new thread in?
Which is what I suggested ages ago on this thread. I would much rather take the engine and box out than just remove the cylinder head, there is far less to go wrong removing the whole lot.
Sorry fella I must of missed that
Great minds an all that though
lol. Paul's idea was only four posts above your own.
I can now get one out on my own in about 3 hours, with a couple of you doing it it's a fairly quick job.
