ARC is a lot harder than MIG unless you have some welding experience.

My mate is a welder to trade and he can use an ARC welder no probs but i was less than useless with it. I can however use the MIG no probs as it's sooooooo easy.

Why not just use you dads mig welder???? ARC is usually for more heavy guage stuff

Hmm, I'm one for trying new things

I guess I could just use my dads welder all the time, just it's at his work place - I'm after my own garage and I don't really wanna be taking his welder back and forth not that he uses it that much anyway

Ah well, at least I know that it'll be a real challenge if I do get one

    arc sucks on thin panels...
you either donīt get the electrode to start the arc properly, have LOADS of burned insulation residue (or whatever you call it in english) and therefore an inconsistent weld or burn holes in the sheets...

get a cheap mig welder and good gas...

Best bit of advice right there.

Put it this way. My mate ( the welder ) has a HUGE ARC welder in the back of his works van. It really is a monster as he sometimes does welding on steel building structures and he still uses the MIG welder we have in our workshop for doing any bodywork stuff.

Yep, we've got a couple of Arc welders here, but for welding my car I've hired a mig in the past. I have done some bits with the arc welder but the thin sheets most of the car is made from it is tricky.

Erm... watch you don't set your seats on fire

Nope, I used a wet towel stuffed down the seats. I nearly set that on fire. At the time I didn't realise the seats came out so easy.
