As above, it sounds like a scooby and been told it's the oil packs...dont know what this is but I've been advised I can spray it with wd40 and it should be ok....not too convinces though...can I get some advise please?

never heard of spraying them with wd40 before lol
it is more then likely your coilpacks, they are breaking down. get another set, 10min job to change them, 2nd hand set should only be £20-ish??
The last time my car sounded like a Scooby I had chipped a valve.
A compression test would be a good place to start... and check the plugs when you take them out.
nackered dropping resistor is common. often run on 3cylinders when nackered, leading to scooby sounding.
its a little silver box plugged in to the loom somewhere by your air filter i think. its a 2 min job to plug in one from another sx running fine to see if it cures the prob.
do scooby's sound bad ?!? Why ?
The problem could be a number of things really.
Firstly check what cylinder it is. To do this, remove all the bolts holding the coil packs in. Start the car and lift each coil. You should get a nice spark from all of them. If you find one that isn't making a spark, it's knackered. If their all sparking, you should be able to pick out which coil doesn't make any difference when removed from the spark plug.
At this stage, remove the plug from the offending cylinder. Is it OK?
If unknown, swap it with a plug from another cylinder.
Are all the injectors firing?
Not too easy, but unplug the injectors in turn, again see which one makes a difference or not.
Compression test mine was doing this and it was a head gasket
I would suggest this route:
Check Plugs
Check Coil Packs
Do a Compression Test
Mines done this and it turned out to be the head gasket.
Ok, worst comes worst, how much is a head gasket going to set me back? parts only, not inc fitting
Depends what gasket you wanna get bud also will depend if the head needs skimmed. I was lucky, mine was straight and didn't need it so I papped a Cometic 1.3mm One on mine.
Parts your looking at are:
Head Gasket
Rocker Gaskets
Exhaust Mani Gaskets
Head Bolts
Timing belt if you want to change it
I think all in I was around 250-300 for all my bits (All Genuine Nissan parts except the uprated HG).
Ah you gotta love scooby roars though! weak engines though apparently
Check it properly mate...
I had a scooby sound after rebuild... which was strange . Because after first start it was smooth and half an hour later one cylinder stops firing.
Took me few days to check everything and finally it was f.....g spark plug apparently brand new ngk platinum.
This what rubix saying is correct way to check it, but take the spark plug off from cylinder which is misfiring and try with another one.
Take care.

A nice trick to verify this, is to pull the coil pack slightly away from the plug, so that it has to arch from the pack to the plug. For some odd electrically physics type reason, creating a gap further up the circuit increases the spark in the plug Used the trick on an engine recently, and was useful to identify which cylinder was missing (pull off the one you think is missing, and if it runs the same, you found it), and then slowly push is back toward the plug. If it starts firing just before contact, then you can be reasonably sure it's the plug.
Also, try swapping plugs around to see if the miss moves with the plug
when mine did this was told it was the "fuel injector damper", ive learnt since its not called that but it was the shiney silver box attatched to where the airfilter box is, it had stopped the injector on cylinder 1 working someone else will probably know what its called
turbo gaskets.. they make the car sound sh!t, i mean, like a scooby
i had this on the way back from JAE. it was a spark plug
