    Scott's USDM Zenki S14 daily.

    Hey!

Finally decided to post a build thread up here! Apologies for the changes in past-present tense, i'm piecing this thread together from the last couple of months worth of posts elsewhere.

I'm originally from the UK but I recently emigrated to the US for work, I needed a car and I've always wanted an S14

Anyway, after passing my driving test over here, I searched craigslist high and low for weeks until I found an S14 that was perfect for what I wanted. It was a 95 zenki, which whilst I wasn't a huge fan of the Zenki front-end, was a huge plus as it it's emissions exempt here in NC, which makes the Sr20 swap a possibility. Furthermore it had a rebuilt SR20 and rebuilt transmission that had been installed by the current owner, a mechanic for a Nissan dealership. The owner was cool enough to send me some photos across of the rebuild, aswell as some background info on the Car's history. I did a Carfax report (the US version of a HPI check) and found that the car had been serviced by Nissan for it's entire life, never had an accident (the US reports are super comprehensive) and had always been serviced regularly.

The original KA24 had been long gone by the time the previous owner got the car, and unfortunately the SR that was in it when he first had the car self detonated due to running too much boost. This had prompted him to get a new engine. The shell itself had 225k miles on it (I know) but the engine only had 4k miles, so essentially it had been ran in and was like new. I don't have the spec's to hand (I'll post them tomorrow) but it had had alot of work done on it, I mean, everything mechanically was new. The SR is running 7.5psi of boost, it has all the supporting mods required to push for 300hp minus the Z32 MAF and 550cc Injectors. Exactly what I was looking for.

    The Spec:

    S14 SR20DET running 7psi
    5 speed rebuilt tranny, MT90
    redline
New Nismo Motor and tranny mounts
New Stage 1 ACT clutch & flywheel
    New CP Pistons and rings
    Stock Rods

    New crank thrust bearing
    New rear main seal
    New front timing cover
    ARP rod bolt kit

    New power steering rack
New walbro 255 lph fuel pump
New lower control arms and ball joints
    New Isis electric cooling fans
    New aluminum 1 piece driveshaft
    New valve cover gasket
    New spark plug well gasket
    New turbine outlet gasket
    Garret A/R 60 M24 turbo
    Rocker arm stoppers
    5 lug swap

    new rear speakers ( Pioneer)
    new driver side window regulator
    am/fm/cd/aux input head unit
fully functioning power windows, locks and mirrors.
    battery relocated to trunk.

Anyway, long story short, I went through the painful process of getting the forms signed, the title notorized and the money across to the owner, and boom! The car was mine. I wish I could say that I jumped in it and drove the 200 miles home..but I didn't. See, when you're in the US and you're starting from scratch, you can't use your UK license card or a temporary US license to register a Car. As a result I had to rent a Uhaul truck to trailer the car home (makes sense..huh?) which ended up being an ordeal in itself but that's a different story.

So, once I got back to my place, I unloaded the car, and there she sat until my license turned up..that week was agony..driving a shitty Chevvy rental car until I could take the car to get it registered. That's where the real pain started...the car was registered..but now it needed to be inspected.

I took the car to the nearest state inspector on my temporary plate which expired in 2 days. They promptly failed my visual inspection based on my tints and the lack of an EGR valve...which sucked. To make things worse, in NC, once you fail, you're put into a system that forces you to return to the same garage for your re-test. So, I had 2 stressful days to fix the issue, in order to make good on the failure and get the car on the road. This involved having the tints removed ($100) and having a local specialist salvage an EGR from a KA engine, in order to connect it up like so:

I can't stress how stressful getting this fixed against the clock was..if it wasn't for my colleague and fellow 240 owner ferrying me around to get it sorted and calling in some favours..it probably wouldn't have come off. His is the white 240 in the back:

So yeah..the car is legal, on the road, registered and paid for. I can't tell you guys how happy I am with it.

Time to start fixing it up!

The issues I have found so far:

Carpet is super shabby - Will be replaced with a fitted Red carpet.
Clutch is low (I have bought new master and slave cylinders)
Belts sequel like CRAZY (these should be arriving on monday)
Oil is still semi-synth from the run-in, so I'll be doing a change to fully synthetic this coming week.
Wheels and tyres are fubar. The tyres are sooo shitty that getting traction in a straight line is a challenge. I've now ordered replacements.
The Bonnet is dented and looks shit in black.
The short shifter throw is wayyy too short
    The steering wheel is grim
The door-skins are shabby, the driver's side one has a hole
The seats are grim, will be replaced with red Acura RSX (DC5) Recaro's
There's no cigarette lighter - I've got a replacement, I just need to wire it in
Fan's are currently connected to a switch in the cabin, I'm scared i'm going to forget to turn these on, so I think I'll pick up a clutch-fan asap.
I think there are some electrical issues, the wiring is a little funky in places, I will be tidying that up asap. The battery died on me last week, it was brand new which confuses me. Potentially I'll need a new Alternator if the circuits check out.
Headlights are yellowed..badly - I've picked up some clear lens', I'll be fixing those asap.
    Climate controls don't work correctly

So yeah..lot's to do before I even think about mods. The main concern for me was the tyres, they're downright dangerous atm, and causing the car to under-steer like crazy. I pulled the trigger and decided to get some new wheels and tyres right away.

Myself and a friend spitballed with some photoshop ideas for wheel setups:

I have always loved Grids (I also had them on my Civic) so I ordered some 18x9.5 Rota Grid's in Gunmetal Grey, with Goodyear F1's in 225/40(F) and 245/40 (R). I'll be rolling the arches when they turn up, hopefully they fit!

Anyway, enough of my rambling. More soon!

So I've been doing some work on the s14. The headlights and wheels were the top of my priorities as soon as I picked up the car. The headlights were just..yellow and stained and barely even put out any light at all.

So I put them into the oven and replaced them with some circuit sports clear lens. I ended up making a meal of it by dropping and cracking the very corner of one of the new lens' and having to glue it back together in an effort to repair the damage.

I used silicone boat caulking to seal them up and I'm super happy with the results. I did find a bunch of crap wrong with the headlights but I didn't even want to attempt to repaint the reflectors.

I also bought some new wheels and tyres!

I ended up going for 18x9.5 rota grids e22 and wrapping them in Goodyear Eagle F1s after a few recommendations. I test fitted them last night and minus the fact that the car is way too high im overall pretty happy. I'm going to drop It by an inch or so today and then roll the arches to get it all nice and flush.

    I also added a new lever...don't ask.

Also replaced the belts over the weekend to fix the annoying squealing in the mornings..

Now onto the bad news..somehow the car is now leaking what appears to be transmission fluid and coolant. I've got the car booked in at a local z/s chassis specialist for to take a look next week and try and fix the issue. But thanks to that I haven't even driven the car in a week or so.

    L
    -coolant from oil pan.

    - transmission fluid from gearbox.

All in all, it's going well, I was pretty much sure that I was going to find these kind of issues, so I'm happy to just get them fixed.

So, in the last week or so I spent a fair amount of time wrenching on the car.

Firstly I rolled the arches, I fully tucked the lips front and back to ensure that nothing catches when I'm driving.

I'm not planning on driving super low, but I wanted to future proof the car and my good friend had a roller that he didn't mind me using.

The rears fit great, they're nicely tucked into the arches and sit great, I'm super happy with the way they sit compared to the fronts, they are sunken right into the arches and they are catching the coilovers.

I tried dialling in some more camber in order to gain some more clearance.

Adding another degree of camber helped but they were still too close for comfort. My friend let me borrow his 20mm spacers to see how they'd look, they pushed right out of the arches and looked super shitty (as well as dangerous) so I ended up putting it back into standard fronts whilst I waited for Enjuku to send out my 5mm spacers.

Whilst I waited I took my car to Happy Japs (a local z car specialist)

for them to take a look at the motor. They pressurized the system and found no coolant leaks (yay) but found that the transmission was leaking in several places. Nothing terminal but they have ordered the parts to replace the gaskets in the transmission which I'll be doing soon. They also fitted a clutch master and slave cylinder I had picked up and hadn't found time to fit. They did notice that one of the handbrake cables had failed and was hanging down which is also now on my list of things to fix.

My spacers turned up and I fitted my wheels finally! She sits kinda high because I can't crack the bolts off the bottom of the coilovers to lower the car any more.

I got home and found that my fan had a loose connection and had somehow not been running for a week or two scarily. Luckily it's super cold here and I've barely put 5 miles on it in the past few weeks. Finger crossed no damage has been done to the motor, but it seems okay for now. I've picked up a tonne of parts from radio shack and started wiring up a replacement cooling fan rig consisting of a thermostatically controlled secondary fan and an ignition controlled primary fan, both with in-line switches and led status lights.

    Anyway..more of that later.
    Scott.

Nice car with a good history, be nice to see where you take this

Are you going for bigger figures or reliable 300(+)hp?

Thank you! Sorry if the write up is abit all over the place, I'm piecing parts together from posting on Zilvia and driftworks.

Erm, I don't know really, 300 hp seems like a good figure to me, but I guess if it's possible to run a boost controller with a high and low boost set up id be happy to do that. At the moment I'm still in the 'oh god please don't blow up on me' stage. I think part of what will limit me is that the fuel over here is piss compared to what we have in the UK. 93 octane is the best I can find.

I added 50hp and 10 scene points this week with a JDM silvia emblem:

I also spend a few hours wiring up my fans so they now turn on with the car. I have a thermostat to wire up to one of the fans, but I think for now I'm just going to deal with the fans being an on or off type deal.

I also received a new manlier horn in the mail and ordered some HIDs to replace the bulbs in the headlights.

My friend at work has an sr20 s14 that he has been running daily for the past 3 years or so:

It is crazy to get multiple s14s in the same place, over here they are very very hard to find on the east coast.

Anyway, thanks for the comments! Hopefully wiring up these hella horns goes well...

    Scott's USDM Zenki S14 daily.

Ahaha, I'm not sure if they are banned, I know getting hold of them wasn't easy, although I probably paid like 600quid for a brand new set so the price was better than I had seen over in the UK. It's only when you get over here that you realise how good we/I had it in the UK for parts like those. You can order from driftworks etc in the UK and have it within a day or so. Whereas here it's like 5-10 days for most things because of the vast distances. No garages will have the parts for your sr20 and there is nothing like euro car parts to deliver your part of you get stuck. Kinda sucks like that.

I have been through lizard lick! I live super close to there, but I haven't seen that guy (hard to miss him really). I'm pretty sure I've seen their fleet of trucks a few times..sigh what a thing for an area to be famous for!

I've been massively busy at work this week so I didn't get a lot done. I managed to fit my hella horn, however the placement was pretty ghetto thanks to my intercooler:

    I also fitted my HIDs:

And rewired a larger portion of my add on parts (fans etc) as the previous owner didn't do a fantastic job of that. I wired up a 12v power source inside the car, which only turns on with the engine (stupid I know, but it felt like a huge win for me!). I mounted this in the glove compartment with the relay etc secured behind it out of view.

    Video:

I then got the front end all back together and she sat like this:

I was super happy and went for a drive.

The roads are pretty new and smooth around here but when you do get a pothole it's a doozie. I hit a couple of gorges and the suspension at the back started creaking like crazy. The previous owner installed Ksport coilovers kinda sketchily. As I was installing the wheels I found that the coilovers had barely any preload, the bottom collars are seized and the ride just bottoms out constantly.

So now im questioning if I should salvage the ksports or replace them with Fortune Auto 500's..I get paid this week so I need to see if I can stretch to them.

Also tidied the garage up with some new shelves:

    So yeah..a mixed week.

Yeah, I guess a shroud would be cool, the ones I got just replace the stock bulbs so I left the stock headlight shielding on there, It does scatter but only downwards if you know what I mean. I'll take a photo when I get back from work tomorrow night in the dark. All together I'm pretty happy with it, super easy mod and it looks great. The only issue I have now is that it makes the corner lights look super dull in comparison so i'm going to see if I can pick up some white bulbs for those.

That would be cool if you could as I've been putting off the HIDs on mine for this reason. Failing that I could always do the fogs.

    Scott's USDM Zenki S14 daily.

Hey Auz, I still haven't been able to get a Photo for you as the car has been off the road for the last few weeks thanks to the coilovers being blown. I have ordered a set of Fortune Auto 500's replace them, but annoyingly they are custom made order so they take 3 weeks to turn up. In the meantime I have been removing the old coilovers and doing bits and bobs to tidy the car up. Thankfully I live right by work, and the weather has been shitty so I guess I can make peace with the fact I can't drive the thing.

It was funny to see the GTR's handling the snow perfectly..the muscle cars..not so much

These are well and truly ****ed.

As I removed the coilovers I noticed that the front brakes are toast. The discs (they say rotors over here lol) are deeply scored and basically..yeah they need to be replaced.

I ordered a set of 300zx 4 piaton 300mm calipers, master cylinder, discs, pads and lines to replace them which will hopefully be going on next week. Fortunately, 300zx are fairly common here so the brake components are quite cheap.

Ontop of the whole...useless broken car..I've rewired the fans in the engine bay. I had an issue where the fans weren't turning on with the car and I didn't know, so I have now independently wired each fan, both on separate relays one turns on with the car without any option to turn it off, the other is controlled with a switch. The summers here are in the 30's so I'll be running the fans then, however in the winter it's about as cold as the UK so I would leave the one fan on only to minimise the time it takes for the engine to reach operating temps.

    Other bits and bobs:

    Repainted arm rest

    Broadway mirror

Bride shift boot (to match the bride seats that I'm hoping to buy and the red doors I'll be fitting soon)

So yeah. Hard to maintain a love for a stationary object...I really hope I get these coilovers soon!

    Afternoon all!

I had a pretty shitty start to the year, with the car being out of action for 6 weeks, which when your S14 is your DD and you live in the US means you're trapped by the 4 nearest freeways (which are uncrossable on foot). So after weeks and weeks of using Taxi's to get around, the parts I needed to get the car on the road turned up.

Here she sat for 6 painful weeks.

Made worst, by my friend taking me out in his Zenki every now and again, this thing was CLEAN inside.

First up, I was starting my s14 each week to make sure that everything stayed in working order over the 6 stationary weeks, 4 weeks in I notice a huge puddle of fuel underneath the passenger side frame-rail. After consulting to the tech section on here, and some investigation with a torch, I found that the fuel filter had let go and was leaking heavily from underneath the bottom of the filter.

I picked up a z32 filter and replacement reinforced fuel hoses to fix the issue, I double clamped the bottom of each hose to hopefully prevent it leaking in future. I was so relieved that it was a $50 fix compared to the usual $1000 I seem to drop to fix everything else.

Whilst the car was out of the game, I decided to put together the Z32 front brake swap. Over here the S14 comes with the slow shitty, NA KA24. So because they were so slow, they came with shitty, single piston brake calipers. Originally I just intending to install them out of the box, but seeing as I had a bunch of time to spare to I completed stripped them down and rebuilt them. Then I repainted them too..because boredom.

I had to beg and borrow an air compressor off a fellow S14 owner, he has a Kouki S14 which is VERY rare over, so I was just stoked to see it in the flesh.

He's building a 1JZ, fully built which was pretty great to see in the flesh too.

Anyway, after I built the calipers, resealed them with all new parts, I repainted them and filed down the Nissan logo.

I had to wait until my new coilovers turned up to fit my new calipers, as I had already removed my shitty Ksport coils. They were being custom built by Fortune Auto, which took 6 long weeks before they finally turned up.

In preparation for the incoming lows, I installed a skidplate to protect my Greddy baffled sump. This was pretty awesome to fit, it slotted into the core support and then I bolting it into the crossmember.

I also had to grind away the lip on the dust shield on the brakes in order to fit the larger z32 brake disc. I painted it up afterwards to prevent it getting rusty.

The Fortune Auto 500's were a thing of beauty..just so worth the wait. Every single facet of them was perfectly welded and smoothed.

I put alot of time into anti-seizing every collar and every moving part, and then I fit them. Along with the ground down dust shield lip.

I bled the entire brake system, which because I'm non ABS was pretty easy. Terrifyingly I barely had any brake fluid in the system. I honestly couldn't believe how little fluid I had in the system.

Anyway, after the lines were clear, I fitted the z32 brakes along with z32 to S14 brake lines.

My friend helped me fit the Z32 BMC, we had to bend the hard lines into place and everything bolted up nicely. He accidentally dumped all of the brake fluid into my engine bay without realising..removing all of the paint from under the BMC. After I spotted it, I had to debride all of the paint and then touch it up with some paint to prevent it rusting.

At that point, the suspension was on, the brakes were on, everything was checked and double checked. I rolled the old girl out of the garage.
She was riding alittle high at the front and alittle low at the back, but I was just happy to have a car with amazing brakes and decent suspension.

The next day I dropped the car down and got it sitting how I wanted it.

I had to ghetto pull the rear arches to stop them rubbing. I'll be getting them pulled properly this coming weekend.

Then I went to one of the local meets, which was great. Nice to finally make some non-work friends over here.

Some great photos by one of the guys there:

The next day I went to one of the local Firestone shops that one of the guys from the Meet worked at, they do lifetime alignments for $180, which essentially means they'll use their inground hunter rack to align my car to any specification for free, every day if I wanted it. Bargain

I went with the following specs, I was hoping to get my rears closer to 0.5-1degree of camber, but the rears are almost touching as it is.

So yeah, there she is! The car is all back together and running. I've got a couple of niggling issues, one being a leak in the dummy cat, the blow-by-air pipe needs to be swapped out, the coolant needs to be bled for air and the wheels needing to be powdercoated.

    Anyway, cheers for looking!
    Scott.

Scott, potentially a weird question but I'm fairly sure I used to skate with you in Stourbridge?
If I'm not even close then Ah well, if so its awesome to see you're living my dream over in America with such a cool car.

Yeah dude! That's me! Down at Ramparts..seems like a lifetime ago!

I moved away from the UK at the end of last year and decided that if I was going to leave my Stourbridge/family/friends/(now ex) Girlfriend behind, I would atleast have a cool car It's been a pretty good way to meet new people over here. I remember seeing you driving through Hagley actually, was stoked to see a 200sx around those parts

Kouki SR20 aswell? The more I realise how rare they are over here (in the US) the more I feel like I should've appreciated them in the UK. Kouki's are usually 95 Zenki's with Kouki front ends, because the 97 onwards Kouki's have to be OBD2 compliant and can't pass emissions tests with SR's.

    Ugh, that white plasti-dip overspray.
