I keep seeing adverts for 4-door coupés - and it bugs me.
A coupé to me is 2 doors, and a saloon style boot.

Coupe is french for "cut off" according to a show I saw a decade ago. I think it was Top Gear.
2 door, boot (not hatch) and sloping back window.
simples...
So basically an S14 not S13?
I am thinking more not a Jaguar XF and not a Citroen DS4...
I always consider a coupe as a car with no window surround on the doors..
Oh god, Docwra, Si and I had an argument about this a few years ago.
I can't remember if we ever came to a conclusion.
i used to have a calibra which i considered to be a coupe ( not a very good one .... but a coupe none the less ) even though it had a hatchback.
It's what you call a car who's owner couldn't justify buying a proper sports car, but needed a similar level of practicality of a saloon or estate but without the "family" image
I saw a DS4 on the way home tonight....a coupé it definitely is not
I take it the new Scirrocco isnt a coupe as they call it then LOL
Coupe is just an approximate shape, nothing really to do with the liftgate or decklid.
You lost me at "liftgate" and "decklid".....
In my mind it's probably just the roof line that would generally distinguish a coupe from a saloon.
Saloon roof lines continue straight back from the b pillar, a coupe's starts to slope down almost immediately after the b pillar.
Hatch / boot is irrelevant IMO. I'd consider coupe to be a 2 door design on the whole but I guess some 4 doors could qualify.
Edit: wiki says this http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupé
