how much do you reckon to get a mechanic to sort out the cold start?

The cold start is controlled by the ecu in accordance to the engine temp sensor and a solenoid under the throttlebody. The solenoid under throttle body allows more air in by the ecu in accordance by the engine temp sensor. So either the solenoid is stuck closed or the temp sensor is broke, or could be both.
Alanjugler is coming over tomorrow very kindly to look at the car see if its a simple fix
id be intersted in this but i need something reliable for work, and ive had a car with big ends go before and i didnt enjoy taking the engine out and having the crank done, and if you say the big ends were done but are rattling sounds like the crank has gone. Let me know how it goes with this fella looking at it then i might come and have a look myself.
Will do mate i'll let u know cheers!
forgot to say mitch put this engine in this car and said it has always made a slight rattle and didnt get any worse over a couple of track days he did in it

Alright mate, would you be interested in a mk4 golf 1.8? With cash my way? I can send you some pics. Give me a text if you are on 07788554667 as I'm on a mates account and il send you some pics cheers
had a look at this this evening, managed to sort the cold start problem - the cold start valve was completely shut choking off the air supply to the engine.
replaced that with one of my spares - fired up (once I'd remembered to plug the coil packs back in ) straight away. left it for a while to cool down over about an hour and a half - fired up again straight away.
the noise that I heard from the engine sounds more like a lifter is draining when it has been left and it's noisy when cold - once the engine had warmed up I couldn't replicate the noise so I don't think it's the big ends - at least, the noise I heard wasn't.
the body is in decent condition (I personally haven't seen a UK 200 that's cleaner in person) with only a few areas that might need attention eventually but nothing that'd affect an MOT - just cosmetic.
it was nice to meet you craig - let me know how it goes and if you need any help - give me a shout
