    What causes the swirl marks I keep hear being mentioned?

    The main cause is poor washing technique but anything that touches the car, particularly if there is dirt or dust on the car, can cause swirl marks. Swirls are basically very fine scratches in random directions, but the way they catch the light makes them look like they swirl around light sources.
