Best family car for under 3k

I'm looking at buying a new car for the family and been looking mainly at the Audi estate options, but wonder what other people think.
    The spec I'm after is:
    Diesel
    2 litre or less
    Not an MVP
Need to have enough room for 4 people and holiday luggage (buggy, travel cot etc)
    £3k or less.

Either ideas or from experience of owning.
    Many thanks

Honda civic ep3 (type r if you can afford the fuel).

Mine has a decent size boot. Comfortable inside. And my type r regularly returns 35mpg.

We cart our 5 year old around all the time in it and it's easy.

I also preferr 3 door cars even with the little one.

Boot size on that isn't enough, put a buggy and travel cot in and that's it all done pretty much. (got 6yr old and 1 yr old)
Looking for more than 35mpg to be honest which is why staying with the diesel options.
Not fussed about performance got my s14 for that lol
    Focus seem pretty popular option.

Definitely a mondeo then. Our work one takes a beating every day and has millions of miles on it but dives as smooth as anything I've ever driven.

Mazda 6 estate. I've got the 2.3 petrol which isnt very economical but they have diesel variants. Tons of space in the cabin and boot, very reliable, been perfect for my family of four.

With Audi, you pay for the name. Your money will go a lot further with other makes.

Focus - nowhere near enough boot space for 2 kids and holiday luggage unless you're going for the estate, otherwise good. 2-3k-ish Mondeos - nah, from my experience, problematic. Audi/BMW all the way.

Volvo v70 D5...if they have come within budget yet... Serious comfort, some poke and loads of room for all your needs.....oh and they keep on going.....3 series has a smallish boot and big probs with subframes failing on e46 models.

Have a look at saabs mate.
The 9-5 estate is massive. Might also get a9-3 estate. Both available as petrol and diesel.

A d5 is above 2ltr but ours returns well in excess of 40 mpg in a 4wd xc70 so would be even better in a v70... V40/v50 derv would be in budget

What about an MG ZT they do a nice saloon and estate both in derv and Petrol

Mine is the 2.5 V6 190 and running it on LPG makes it very economical (25/27 MPG at £0.70/Ltr )

Parts are cheap and easy to source and 99 times out of a 100 they will have been looked after
