Cool Post Your S13 Brake Setups!

I want food for thought as I've got S14 calipers up front and Z32's at the rear but i'm not getting a decent bite. Brakes are bled properly and there's brand new pads front and rear. Reckon it's just a case of bedding in? Because I stood back and took a gander at my fronts and I have to say I'm after a bigger disc.

Thoughts, suggestions and most importantly pics of your set ups would be much appreciated.

When you say bite, do you mean instant response/ firm peddle? If so you should get a Z32 master cylinder, because you now need to move more fluid, 8 pistons as opposed to 2.

Hold off on the bigger discs until you've done it. No need to cart around unsprung weight if you don't need to.

Idd have you upgraded the master cylinder?

    Ive got a
R32 GTST master cylinder (non abs)
    R32 GTR fronts
    R32GTR rears
Hydralic Handbrake (although this was juddering yesterday when applying)

when i hit the brakes i feel like im about to go through the windscreen.

i too think i need bigger discs (visually)

How new are the brakes? It can take a little while for the pads to bed into the discs.

Hold off on bigger discs until you decide wether or not you're going 5-stud.

My pedal is firm but and the biting is quick as normal but it doesn't scrub off the speed as quick as I'd expect. I only do the 30 or 40 for the work commute. Admittedly I don't stamp on the brakes though.

The front pads are brand spanking new, So far I've only put 25 miles on them, But I'm not sure if the fact the cars been standing for a while allowing the discs to get surface corrosion on them will come into play here. I can't see any as of now. (?)

I know, I'm now realising the importance of 5 stud conversion.

As always, Mr Carter is on the money.

My s14 4-pot setup with 280x30mm disks and standard BMC gives loads of initial bite and feel and I can lock up all four wheels without excessive pedal pressure.

I do have a BMC Stopper fitted though which removes a lot of bulkhead flex.

I rate ebc red stuff they were top notch on the gt4 with the std 4 pots and 312mm std discs, similar to s14 i'm guessing? When i get s14 4 pots i'll defo be getting red stuff pads, on initial bite they literally have the seatbelts holding u back from going through the windscreen

OK so time to bring this subject back up, My discs and pads have surely bedded in by now with mixed driving but I'm just not getting a decent bite at all and the discs look Puny in the words of the Hulk. I'm after bigger discs for the front and I don't mind making spacer brackets to move the caliper forward, So what's the biggest disc I can get on utilising S14a calipers and factory 4 stud?

It will depend on the shape of the space behind your wheels.

Some disk/caliper combinations will go onto 15in wheels without spacers but won't go under 17s with spacers.

So...what wheels are you running ?

Have you fitted a Z32 master cylinder along with the brakes?
Are you running S13 280mm discs up front?

Pretty sure MEL is running 5-stud S14 280x30mm disks not 280x22mm.

Running a full gtr setup - 324mm discs up front

When i first fitted the z32tt bmc I was running a standard s14 setup at the front and a 33gtst rears

Thought that comment was aimed at Tosseef

Yep, stock disc up front. I think it's 280mm as it looks tiny.

    Good advice

I run Z32 front and rear.
When i fitted the Z32 BMC together with the rear brakes it seemed to do 2 things:
1, more capacity in the BMC, so less pedal travel and firmer feel.
2, brake balance moved a bit to the rear which means the rear brakes actually do something.

The standard Nissan setup always felt as is the rear does close to nothing.

On twisty mountain roads here in Austria the 280mm fronts seem to have a hard time, although they do not fade.

EBC red stuff ceramic are good pads to use
