Advice please, strange car buying tactics

    Afternoon,

Yesterday afternoon i advertised my car on the trade it website. Time for something fun again . Within an hour i had an e-mail asking "If the item is for sale". I replied saying that the car was still for sale. I then received this e-mail

"Thanks for the reply to my question about it been for sale,i will want
you to please do explain to me the present state of it and also if you
can get back to me with some pics as well,i will also want to inform
you that i will be making the payment of it via PayPal which i believe
is safe and secured and also the PayPal charges is on me which i will
also pay for so all i need from you now is for you to get back to me
with your PayPal email address for me to make the payment once you
have gotten back to me with the details about it and also with the
pics as well, i wont be around to check for myself but i will be
having a mover who will be coming for the pickup as soon as the
payment is cleared. Thanks as i hope to read back from you soonest"

I did as requested and sent photos of the marks on the car. I said i would prefer cash on collection or if it has to be paypal then the car would not move until the money cleared paypal and was in my bank account. To which i got..

"Hello got your mail , the reason i'm making the payment via paypal is that it is safe for me i can't trust any body with my cash when i'm not around, so do get back to me with your paypal id to make payment to you.

    Thanks "

I once again expressed my concern with this set up and offered to deliver the car. I then received this ..

"I would have appreciated that but the car won't be moved until you receive your money.i will have an agreement with Paypal to suit the two of us"

My concern lies with the fact she has never seen the car, driven it or heard it running yet is happy to pay the ful amount. She hasnt even tried negotiating. I am worried that if i proceed, she pays and then i move the funds to my bank account that she can still lodge a dispute after she has collected the car and i am left with no car and owing paypal money. All seems a little strange to me. Also not being o'fait with paypal and their regs doesnt help.

Any views or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Well other than the poor English which would normally concern me...

I think you're right to be worried with the other stuff. Sounds very dodgy to me

Say OK, but advise them that it will take 30 days for a large sum of money to clear security checks and be transferred into your account. Also add that the person coming to collect the vehicle must bring photographic proof of ID (BRITISH drivers license) along with proof that they have been sent to collect the vehicle and insurance for the vehicle in question.

    Then see what they say.

Paypal have a phone number to ring if you have any queries so you can alert them of potential fraud when the money is in your account by saying you are unsure if it is fraudulent or not and they will do the rest for you.

Paypal actually works much like a weird bank. When you send instructions for payment, paypal pay the payee then take your money. If there was a problem there it would show up within 7-14 days let alone 30.

That should help weed out a scammer

Hi mate, does smell, but you never know.

Why don't you call PayPal, explain in full & ask them how you would stand under the various scenarios that could happen? Maybe ask for her(?) relevant PayPal details, & pass them to PP to see if they are willing to give an indication as to their validity?

Also, get a phone number for her & speak in person. Spoken word is usually easier for a foreigner to speak than spell, & you can point blank express your concern’s & judging by the speed & type of reply, may well pick up a 'feeling' ref honesty or not...

Worth at least going this far for a sale?

Sounds like a variation of the same old scam rearing it's head again, albeit with Paypal involved rather than a cheque.

I bet you any money you'll be told next that they want to send you payment for the car plus the cost of having the car collected and want you to pay whoever is to collect the car. Then you'll be asked to make the payment online to a "shipping company" etc etc.

I don't know of any case where they actually came and took away the car. Generally they just take the money and run, and the money the've sent to you bounces.

I'd tell him to fcuk right off.

no dont ignore it, 419eater it.

say you are worried about this being fradulent, and you would need photographic proof of her to prove she is real, and the deal is real.

explain, you have done as requested so far (sending photos) and this is just ot protect your self, like they are doing by only wanting to use paypal.

I've had a similar thing happen to me though eBay selling my iPod, basically how it works is he/she will have a credit card linked to their PayPal witch gives them 120 days under the credit card act section 75 to do a charge back on any purchase, in short your being scammed! I suggest you take her/his PayPal address and say you will request the payment, that way you will have the details to report it to PayPal so they can investigate it more and ban them so this can't happen to anyone else

You can request payment to any address, and they'll just send you a fake 'you've got funds' email.

If you want to mess with them, get them to waste their time mailing bad cheques.

Definate scam but a slightly weird one as they are looking to steal your car.

It's something the police should be looking into because either here or abroad there's got to be a chopshop thats absolutley raking it in.
