    BDC 2013 - SXOC s13 V8 Prep :)

Following on from the 2012 build which can be found at: http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.p...Project/page10 . This year I have decided to ditch the Sr20det in favour of the 4.4ltr M62 BMW V8. Donor car was a 540, engine came with a 6 speed gearbox, M5 clutch and associated bits.
    SO..

To begin I removed the old Sr20det, I loved the engine, its ran problem free all year but with the cost of going stage3 for more ponies, its was financially more viable to go V8 and with there being less component to go wrong it seemed like the sensible option, we will find out whether or not this is true I’m sure.

Pic’s of the engine removal, initial strip down and bay cleaning.

Got the engine bay cleaned and stripped down, decided to strip everything back and start a fresh as it was looking a bit worse for wear, with some added fab work / tidying up to the front end. Loom has gone completely! A decision I will most definitely live to regret. lol

Seats etc are now in storage; think I might put some carbon or fibreglass doors on to counter act the added weight of the v8 too (if there is any extra weight that is). Loom weighed a tonne.

    Small progress but pics anyway:

A pile of nuts and bolts that were holding the car together! ha ha

Hope to get all the suspension off tomorrow, leaving the back end in situ though as its never gone wrong and seems to be as good now as when I left it.

Lord Clive: think I will go for a stand alone ecu, not sure what yet?? What did you use...

    Thanks for the positive comments.

Mines only the 4litre from a e34. 3 wires. BOOM... on stock ECU.... It was a V8 on a budget, hence the stock dual mass flywheel + clutch and stock headers (slight mod)... given it some serious abuse and all has held well

When mine breaks/slips ill be going this route for FW:

Ttv racing, came in at £369 delivered. Apparently a solid mass makes a big difference.
    http://www.ttvracing.com/BMWM60flywheel.html
    On a M5 clutch/unrated jobbie.

Advise you to go metal on metal engine mounts if you want the engine right back in the bay without tunnel/firewall mods as there is literally no room for engine rock ; along with a s14 NON ABS rare as hens teeth servo... These are half the size of a ABS one and allows you to get the engine 20mm back in the bay.

Also use the BMW pedal/clutch master cylinder and marry it up with the Nissan clutch pedal to save money on using a pedal box- again allows you to get the engine right back... 'norfys' project thread on DW gives some ideas on this... mines all a bit secret

Has the car got 540 traction control? If so there is a butterfly in the TB, remove and weld up as very restrictive, or use a inlet etc from a beemer V8 without out TC

See 'crackers' project thread on DW. He used a AEMS ECU iirc on the 4.4 with very good results!

    Hope this helps

Top advice there mate, just been speeking to Lewis on Facebook, it will probably be as per his s13 tbh, it seems to work ok As for the pedals I think I am going to put a box in, for the sake of a couple hundred quid its going to be so much easier to fit and maintain. Wiring will be done from scratch, build a kit car before and its the only way to know whats going on. lol

Hopefully end up something like this:

Not far to go then, lol

Its a fair old size like but without turbo, intercooler and associated crap it actually works about the same weight up front (I plan to push back as far as possible too).

Yeah going to hand brush the interior, cage and engine bay once prepped. Got the dash out just now, scary wiring!

Thats all the behind dash crap done away with, I am going to use a small electric fan to keep the screen clear and now its all out you really appriciate the quality of the Nickson Motorsport roll cage, feel lucky to have such a good cage especially when chucking it around Knockhill and the like.

I think a pedal box is a waste, and be hassle getting it set up right..

You will not gain getting the engine back with one as the restriction after that is tunnel and firewall.

Mine is completely 100% not touched, well tunnel got a bit of a bashing, no different to what you would have to do with a rb25 box.

engine is low in the bay (even strut brace clears by a fair bit..), sump is flush with subframe and still have stock under tray

id personally re fit the stock blowers, all the other options are generally crap, the best one ive seen for screen demisting was when a friend of mine fitted an old mini heater matrix box as it has 2 inch hose outlets. there is nothing worse than not being able to feel your fingers when driving quickly either, we kept all the heaters in a 106 rally car we built a few years ago for that exact reason, being comfortable in a car can make a huge difference to your driving ability too.

thats not too bad then, are you allowed windows or sliders to be open when running, just incase it rains and starts to steam up???

id love to have my s13 as purely a track/drift toy and make all the looms etc myself, would be so much neater than the stock complicated looms

Yeah you can run with sliders open and windows down just a couple inch's. Generally a lap will last only a matter of seconds so I was just keeping the doors open untill I was sent. I did have the matrix there and full of hot water though.
