Does it really matter then what diff I have?
How do I tell what sort of diff it is?

Different aftermarket diffs recommend different oil iirc. Such as kazz and nismo diffs. You should be able to tell by taking off the backing plate and having a look at the diff itself.

Not sure tbh, there are different types of diffs too such as vlsd and plated etc. Best thing is to take a couple pics and post up on here.

As for 1.5 and 2 way, driving the car will tell you that, 1.5 ways only lock on acceleration and slight deceleration iirc and 2 ways are locked on accle and decl.

I havent driven with a proper diff in ages, just use a welder now so cant really commment on the feel. Someone else should be ablr to help out there tho.

What redsx is getting at is, what do you mean uprated...
    Plated diff?
    Helical?
Stock viscous that's been spat on, rubbed with a hanky then called uprated?

If you don't know, is it noisy in tight turns ?

Like a worn diff sound/humming? Or do you get clunking/skipping etc when turning?

So it could just be a welded diff?

I bought the car from torque gt who said it was either Cusco or nismo but unsure what type and it feels totally different to my mates welded diff
If I take the rear diff casing off would I be able to tell what it is just from looking at it?

You want be able to tell the brand but you will be able to tell which type of diff you have. If its a plated diff that's clunking then I would say the wrong oil is in it right now. I have a 2way and it doesn't clunk, my friend has a 2way and his was very clunky until he changed the oil for recommended stuff and now it doesn't clunk.

If it still clunks then I would say it hasn't been built properly

You don't make it easy for anyone to help you lol
Some plated diffs are supposed to be used with mineral oil, some want synthetic.
Nismo's are supposed to need synthetic but tbh it wouldn't bother me, just don't leave it in forever. This oil has proven to shut up noisy diffs, particularly Nismo's.

Weather mineral or not, you will need an oil for plated LSD's as they contain a friction modifier for them.

The oil weight needed can easily be found on the diff manufactures websites.
