Nissan Primera P12 cold start\ idling issues, please help!

    car is a 03 reg primera p12 2.0 petrol

Been having this issue for ages, took it to a couple of garages and they cannot diagnose the fault.

When starting the car from cold the revs drop and sometimes it stalls, sometimes it doesn't, then the revs go up to normal. sometimes I have to rev it to prevent stalling.

when cold the engine feels like it has no power, and when driving with the engine hot or cold and you come to a stop and let the revs drop to idle, they SOMETIMES drop to almost 200rpm and then go back up to normal 800rpm. if you let the revs drop gradually (coast in gear) it idles fine

That's the symptoms, things I've tried, new MAF sensor, disconnecting the MAF, disconnecting the battery, tested the MAF wiring.

The car had a diagnostics and only came up with a NATS malfunction, tried the other key, tested the emissions and it smelt of sulphur and it failed, revved it for a few mins then passed with flying colours.

Checked all live data on diagnostics and everything's working as it should.

I rang Nissan dealer today (last resort) and they said that they probably wouldn't be able to find the fault if nobody else has (it's been on 3 different diagnostics machines)

anybody give me any ideas what to do next

We dont see too many 2.0 p12s but the 1.6 behaves alot like this when the timing chain is stretched.
The throttle bodies seem to gather oily deposits too which usualy cause them to idle too high.

Does it have a cold start regulator like the CA ?

Might also be an air leak letting in unregulated air.

Do the diagnostics show if it is running lean ?

hmmm, I'll have a look in to it thanks!

Wouldn't the ECU throw up a fault code because the engine timing is wrong tho?

doesn't have a cold start regulator, checkd for vacuum leaks and everything is fine.

can't remember about it running lean/rich but the old spark plugs were a bit white (which i think is lean can't remember)

Has the car been running fine and suddenly developed the problem ? Or has it been laid up and recommissioned recently ? Engine Temp Sensor ?

had the car for a few months and was fine to start off with, then started getting worse and worse and stalling a lot more. engine temp sensor is a possibility.

ya usually they will through up a camshaft or crankshaft sensor fault.

Common for the cat having a hole in them. Causes lots of running issues. Can be checked using consult and watching the pre and post cat oxy sensors.
Think your Nissan garage are a bit scared to look into it just in case they can't fault it.
