This guy stuck a Nexus 7 tablet in his E46

Have been thinking of trying something similar in my s-body with a cheapish screen and raspberry pi. This chap has done an extremely tidy job of it. http://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments...looks_awesome/

Hmm i like that rom, support for usb audio (which is a must as using a headphone jack for car audio is gay)

Might as well just buy one of the touchscreen stereos you can get now, I stuck a Pioneer one in my E39. Uses the same surround as that.

I've got a nexus 7 in my scooby, in the dash top pod sat nav position. I tried the rom listed above, but it's got a few bugs and is getting pretty old now (and I don't use it for audio - I've got a normal car radio for that).

I run a standard android build - combined with Tasker it starts up / shuts down on the ignition key, runs all the needed apps (Torque ODB, Waze etc). It took me ages of faffing around to get it to work right, but now it's pretty much spot on

edit - looks like that's a different rom actually than the one I used to use, so ignore the old comments...

Most of the installs use an OBD reader - I have a cheap bluetooth reader that I can plug into the diag port which will show gauges for boost, all temperatures, injector trim, MPG, speed, BHP etc, a bit like a GTR. If the car doesn't support OBD, or you don't have an aftermarket ECU (you can do similar with megasquirt etc) I think you are pretty scuppered...

Top work, that looks better than the OEM installs on most new cars . There's a bizarre trend for interiors that look like someone's just glues a tablet to the top of the dash.

Be about £250 for the Advance Controller + Smart Adapter... Not too bad IMO...

On touchscreens in aircraft cockpits they do that intentionally to provide a places to anchor and stabilise your hand while poking at the tablet with a finger.

I have no idea why they do it in cars though, most of them aren't even touchscreens.

But, that won't have performance monitoring on which you could feasibly add to this setup with what ABT has posted up. I (and many others) don't want gauges everywhere and the only other alternative would be to make a new instrument cluster. This is quite a neat solution. With navigation as well it probably works out cheaper than one of the double DIN touchscreen units (Pioneer ones start at £550 or so) that still won't do the performance monitoring.

The headunits you can get are android based IIRC so you can run diagnostics etc on them. i also didnt spend anywhere near £550 on mine (about £250 I think but it was in a sale)

Dont the tablets keep turning the screen off if you are not using it?
