    Which antivirus

    Hi,

Could do with some suggestions regarding antivirus software. I have used Zonealarm for the 5years+ and been happy with it but Im having problems with it on my new laptop which runs windows 8. So Im thinking of something else as my subs run out in a weeks time. I need it to be a multi computer deal, so to speak, as I need it for 2-3 pc's and dont want to shell out 2-3 times. I want it to be pretty much fit and forget too.

Does any one one have any suggestions as an alternative to my Zone Alarm Extreme. I know of the obvious ones like Mcafee and Norton but for some reason I have something against them, maybe its because every time you install a piece of software you get a bloody trial version of Mcafee trying to install on your system! It may be the dogs though and be worth having in all fairness, I just dont know.

    Any help appreciated.

    Rich.

TBH the Microsoft one is as actually pretty decent, unobtrusive, and free. MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), you can download it from the MS website.

Mse is not available for win8. It been replaced by Windows defender.

In my experience mcafee is piss poor, causes us a lot of problems at work. We invariably uninstall it and replace it with mse or defender.

Ok, I run a system with win7, my work pc, and a laptop at home with Win8. So just use defender and fire wall on the win7 system and mse on the win laptop ? Is that enough?

Avast Free has been top rated by PC Pro for a long time. Lightweight and scans all your web traffic.

Windows 7 onwards built-in firewall is fine, no need to add anything else.

Why? In the old days it was poor, but these days it is is probably the best commercial product on the market. Resource friendly but well protective

It did smell a bit rank intially though

With AVG... You don't know you haven't had a virus. That's the best bit

Following Cluck's advice I've set Norton on everything now, both for business & personal, & so far (T.Wood) nowts beaten it. It did false alarm with a LavaSoft AdAware product for a while, & recently stopped letting me run Thisisu JRTool, but it works, unlike AVG, which I had used on two work laptops until they got diseased, twice in two months! My local computer shop/repair shop swear by AVG, but it didn't protect my business.

That doesn't give a company the right to hassle and cajole their customers. What are you a bloody Norton rep!? No, I do not want to renew!!

Well uninstall it if you don't like the reminders. Uninstall if you don't want to renew...

Oh I get it... you want the protection Norton gives, you just don't want to pay for it

Almost all virus checkers are now ok for most consumers (even avg), ok the best perform better but if your like most folk and your computer is as open as a cheep hookers fanny then it wont matter.

Whatever you go for make sure you supplement your virus checker with an anti malware packed, something like malwarebytes does a hell of a better job as malware than even the best virus checker.

You need both so make sure you have them.
