Well as I see it most of the problem is the design.

The bolted on outrigger bearing support can't be aligned properly to the shaft and doesn't accommodate tolerance of manufacture. Basically the register of the bearing housing dictates where the centre of the shaft should be but the shaft centre isn't there as it's dictated by the shaft it bolts on.

Remove the close fit of register so bearing centres on shaft and rely on the bolt clamping to hold the bearing housing.

Normally when using vertically split cases (eg a normal gearbox) the distance between the bearings is quite long and the shafts and bearing can cope with slight mismatch between bearing centres. There will always be some mismatch as the cases (and middle plate for gearbox) are all made on different machines and not selected for matching centre distance. Norton Commando had built up cranks that bolted 2 1/2 cranks to a central flywheel, had crankflex issues and solved them with "superblend" bearings. These are neither a ball or plain roller but a barrel bearing that self aligns. but that can't cope with a shaft running off centre to the bearing housing.

Triumph Trident T150/160 and Matchless twins were a right game. T150 had 3 part crankcase and had to be set up with a dial gauge so the 3rd part fitted. Matchless had a middle bearing that was on horseshoe shaped plate. That bearing was assembled and the crank with plate bolted into one case, again a dial gauge was needed to get it true so the other 1/2 case could be bolted on. Get them wrong and you wiped out the crank in a few 1000 miles. Though hopefully it was so wrong it was too tight to turn.

Don't get these issues with horizontally split cases as the cases are all line bored.

Arry, firstly try Paul at selector these guys have a great rep and good prices, they also install quality parts, Paul can give you all the options. The local Porsche tuning specialist uses them for standard and racecar box builds.

Second, some people lose 3k a year in depreciation for driving a shit car, this is a one off and the car is worth it.

Thanks for the recommendations ABT / Scottie. Going to have a phone around over the next couple of days and see what's what. I've already decided that if it comes apart and the IMS isn't absolutely fine I'm going to get the whole lot pulled and have the full rebuild done - get it out the way early so to speak, then at my kind of mileage it should see me through to retirement

Turns out, easiest £300 I've ever parted with Annual service done, nothing required but a wash at this stage

Exact words were 'boy you've got a mighty fine ear there, hearing that, and you're absolutely right your pinion bearing has a touch of wear but...............bring it back to me in 30,000 miles when the rest of us can hear it and we'll fix it then'

I'd recommend Autostrasse to anyone. The guy is an absolute diamond, couldn't have been more helpful or communicative, loves what he does and looked after me a treat. Couldn't ask for more. Lovely stuff.

More comments about how mine's a great car in really good condition, which is nice, too

Yup, now all fully functional. I just need to take my Bosch S4 battery back to ECP as it's borked under warranty.

    Update:

    Annnnd it's broken again

Thankfully nothing too serious - just blown a microswitch in the door mechanism which controls the auto-drop on the windows when opening / closing the door. Can work around it, but it's a PITA.

I'll get a new one on order then I'll have to be taking the door panel off and getting my Deadpool Spork hand ready for action.

Minor update. Found a picture of the dashboard from a year ago when I was having electrical gremlins. Went out in the car yesterday for the first time in a month and noticed that comparing the mileage back, I've done just 900 miles this year

So what's it cost per mile?

    And allowing for (reverse) depreciation.

Bet it's not $50.01 per day, or $4.52 per mile, ha, ha, ha. This from a guy that made a Honda cost $22.07 per day or $1.59 per mile.
