BMW transmission problem
hi all! got a 51 plate 530i m-sport (automatic) and i've lost reverse gear! looking on the internet, it seems that alot of the time, a fluid and filter change will do the trick. has anyone else had this problem? anyone done this fix? i'm just really hoping its not a dead gearbox!! have not got the wanga for that!!!
cheers!

The auto boxes are only about 100 ish on Ebay if you know where to look. Yes it can be fluid but if the damage has been done then it's probably too late. You need to go to bmw for the filter, and the oil is not a regular dexron atf, it's a special synthetic blend, works out at 19 odd quid a litre, and I think you need about 13. We drained about 12 litres out of my 328 and it was low on oil causing slipping.

Has to be from bmw, not cheap at around 10 quid a litre! But the autobox uses a special blended oil, not the usual dexron 3. Some people have tried dexron 3 but ended up killing the boxes pretty quick.
Pretty sure we drained about 9 litres out of mine. With a couple left in the torque converter.
Same goes for the filter. To get the correct oil you need to check the sticker/plug under the box, will have a code or part number for the oil as it changed a few times throughout production.
Make sure when filling that you have the car on a ramp / flat ground, then run it through d-1-5 and hold each gear for approx 5 seconds, do this 3 times in a row then fill up to make sure the torque converter is loaded to ensure correct fluid level.

Oh and when filling after running through the gears keep the car in p and running. Don't just switch it off

all fixed! lets hope it stays that way. i can highly recommend "Terry Cox" garage in colwick (notts)... they were really good and reasonably priced.

was it just the filter/pick up and fluid they changed restored reverse/ or did they have to do other work as well?
just curious as I used to work in a auto gearbox rebuild specialist sort of garage

no mate, it was a complete gearbox swap. reverse had totally gone and these guys changed it for me for £250! everywhere else wanted nearly double that! seems fine now.
