I inherited a nasty vice from my Dad (VSFW)

VSFW = "very safe for work"

On one visit to my parents, my Dad says "I've got an old vice if you want it". Hell yes, said I little realising he was going to pull this monster out of the hedge it had sat in for a decade

It only took me around 3 years to get around to doing anything with it but it has recently become this....

Should last a few more decades eh ?

Its not a whole garage nor even a whole shed but it is kind of shed related

    Lovely Job mate nice one
I bought one the other year for a tenner and decided to refurbish her up in Canary Yellow.
Here's a few pics for you...

Best £10 I've spent in years I hope to pass this to my son, its an old 1920's Record 84 with a 5.5'' jaw with quick release function.

Apparently this is known as a "pole vice" or "blacksmiths" vice

According to my Dad, it was made by my Great Granddad who worked on the Railways out of Crewe Works. I've been told by others that they were made to a standard design for the railwaymen.

I'm hoping that once I have mounted it to my new workbench, I'll be able to put bits of metal in it and on it and hit them very hard with big hammers

Here's a workbench I recently made for my shed...

    Made some space...

Took some old wood I had behind the shed and cut it to shape based on a back-of-a-fag-packet sketch I did in front of the telly one night...

All glued and screwed and properly solid. She's not going anywhere

Cutout for the wood vice was the trickiest bit...

Its a bit heath-robinson but as my Granddad used to say "Champiton like owt, 'til tomorra, my fair youth !"

Not seen a vice like that before. How will you attach it to a bench?

Stripped it down and got it shotblasted (after taping up threads) then painted it with some spare caliper paint I had. Don't know how long that will last. Probs not long

The knob at the bottom is supposed to be set in concrete and a metal U-plate is used to strap it to the bench leg three-quarters of the way up.

Am I the only one who prefers the original rusty finish?

Sadly I have no power in there yet so window provides good lighting during the day at least.

Time will tell if I manage to break the glass, I guess.
