I found weld for a second move and weld for a second basically tacking it but join the tacks worked best.

Hey Jon? You're not wrong. A new weld sticks easier to another weld.

But that's known as cold welding so allegedly not as strong as the welds don't fuse together as well.

Unless you are talking about pulse welding?

It's true it's not as strong but when you're welding skittery rusty metal, you gotta just make it work. If its blowing through, drop the voltage and wire speed if you're using a mig, wire speed is essentially your amps

    Quick update.

Went over the welds from last time again as I wasn't happy with pin holes and other bits. Spent two hours welding and blowing holes and welding lol!
All done and dressed and primed

Then onto the next piece, made it up and there were a couple of places where there was a little gap. I was dead worried because of the last round of welding. Then when it came to welding I found I had no gas. Lucky I found a bottle of pure CO2. And to my surprised I welded it all in one go with not burn through. Had one little pin hole which I zapped in a second.

    Then dressed and primed

Just the outer sill to go now. Then raptor all round then dynax then put the interior back together and MOT!!! Yay! I can't wait. Its nearly been a year since this car has seen the road. Makes me sad

Just a thought, are you welding outside? If you are the wind will cause havoc with the weld. Was it less windy today? Ive got some gasless wire just incase.

It wasn't noticeable windier. But it is windy where I am as I have a field next door. Is gasless wire good? Splatter free welds? I just find that the CO2 splatters a bit. Apart from that seems very good. In fact I think I prefer it lol! Mind you I forgot one detail, I cranked up the wire speed from 5-6 to 6-7.

So.. today was interesting. I bought a new can of Argon CO2 and my welds turned to shit again!!! Switch to CO2 only and they are back to being good???

Anyway.. cut and welded the outer sill on. There was a bit in the corner which was also rotten so cut that out and welded in a piece.

    Welded

    Dressed

    Primed

Yay!!! Tomorrow I plan to paint the whole sill with Raptor. And the boomerang mounts. Then spray some internal stuff inside.

Its quite expensive iirc and i don't think its meant to be as strong but if its splattering loads then it cant be any worse. The gasless has a flux inside a bit like arc welding you just need to chip it off before continuing. Someone may say dont use it but if its windy and you have nowhere else to do it you might not have much choice. You could try turning the gas up a bit to provide a better screen around the weld.

Hey Jon, gas was on full wack. With the Argon Co2 mix I was getting crap welds and lots of burn through. I had a thought. Could is be to do with the pressure of the cylinder?

I may be wrong but the cylinder pressure shouldn't matter as its regulated anyway unless it is getting low on gas. We had argon technical at work(old boy swore by it and we have it for another use) and it was terrible so switched back to coogar5. Try welding in a sheltered area on the of the steel you cut out and see what happens just out of interest.

If it still spits and pops etc when in a sheltered area you may have the wire feed to low or like my old ass welder at home the wire feed is not very stable(fast and slow or is sticking)

Then I got this stuff out and went over all the new bits with it

Then got this stuff out.. the orange can in the background lol!! Thought I had a pic.

I also shot the insides of the boomerang mounts with galvanising spray
