Sound like you are grounding the ignition though injector 3 - which has/had an insulated coil.
Have you got some photos?
Plugs on injector 1, air reg, AAC valve, temp sensor.
Plugs on injector 2, 3 and FICD.
Ground wire on back of head to bulkhead exhaust side?
2 ground ring terminals on plenum?
You do have a UK spec S13 engine bay loom / ECU plug with UK spec ECU?
.

I'm glad you say that as I was thinking along the same lines but sounded a bit strange.
I don't have photos but can get some tomorrow after work.
The braided ground wire goes from the back of the head to one of the brackets on the fire wall that has the flat blade connector.
Yes there are two ground wire ring terminals connected to the plenum.
And yes it's a UK spec wiring loom and ecu.
Can you elaborate as I believe you are onto something here.

Skyshack has a very good point it is easy to mix up some of these plugs as they are all the same and connect them to the wrong things!
Injector wires should have a coloured sleeve. Red, blue, white and yellow.
Ah, well they're a little dirty so I'll clean them off.
I'm sure that the injectors have off centered tabs on the connectors but everything else is centered, does that sound correct?

Definitely got 2 3 and four correct as I compared it to my mates ca. I'll check no.1 later. This would not be the cause of the grounding through injector 3 though would it?

No 3 injector can get confused with one of the plugs that should go to the front of the plenum. I can't remember which one it is. There are a few threads on it.
Check you have not mixed the No 3 injector connector with the one that goes to the front (CAS ? or ETS ?)
Thanks will try that too. I'm in agony with my back at the moment, I did push through it on the weekend because I wanted to sort the car out but I've made it worse now. . Hopefully be a bit better on the weekend so I can do some more tests

Another idea...
To help compression on a newly rebuilt engine, squirt a drop of oil into each cylinder. Enough to help the rings seal without being enough to choke the ignition. It'll smoke a bit when it does start but it will quickly burn off.
Just braved my back pain to go take another look at the car. Here are the pictures of what the plugs are connected to.
