    Dremel replacement?

I've been spending a bit of time under the car grinding the rust off and my trusty old Dremel has finally given up the ghost on me. Motor blew just at the wrong time.

I've had the thing for years so I certainly got my monies worth but I'm wondering if there is a slightly more hard core replacement?

I was considering either buying a couple of cheap Chinese copies in the knowledge that they're going to blow up and just throw them away after use or step up to a slightly beefier Dremel maybe.

What are you lads and lasses using?

Tried a few different types and none were a patch on my dremmel. What have you been using yours for, I find I use the angle grinder more than the dremmel these days.

I've ordered a cheapy angle grinder but not having a ramp there's not much room under the car to one. Found a cheapy copy Dremel on Amazon for £25 that has good reviews. Might give that a go and see how it goes. I could buy five for the price of one Dremel so even if it's not as long lasting it could still work out cheaper

You're doing underbody rust with a dremel, are you mad??

Get a grinder and get one of these on it

I'd suggest an angle grinder with speed adjustment, 12,000 rpm is not for the faint hearted! Gloves and full length clothing is a must, as is a dust mask and googles, safety first

What Dremel are you talking about that's £125? I'm sure actual Dremel's start at £40ish?

Got a couple of wore wheels like that mate, but I find they just start to polish the rust after getting the worst of it off. I used them on the arbs and that worked a treat but there's no way you'd get it into the tight corners round the prop and fuel tank.

As for Dremels, the 175w models are all up around the £100-£125 mark. If you can find me one for £40 I'll bite her bloody hand off!

I used a mixture of wheels when i did mine, the poly strip disc was really good, the angle grinder wasnt suitable in a number of places a dremel would be a worthly addition to your weapons of choice

What have you got in that drill?

I've been using a wire wheel in my angle grinder for the big flat bits and the Dremel for the little fiddly bits but that drill looks like it has the ideal attachment for the bits in between!

Just to add my 2p, that attachment in the drill looks very much like the attachment in this kit from Screwfix that I bought when I did my car:

Also, there's a huge range of Dremels - you may find the best replacement is another, just get the more manly version.

Considering what the old one cost I'm going to try this cheaply and see how it compares

I had a cheap b&q one that blew up as soon as I used a mini cutting disc on it.

I replaced it with this and it works great!
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130891985243

I only use it for cutting bits that the angle grinder would chew or can't get to.

I use it with these cutting discs

Considerably more than 3 Dremels LOL, but I have found them to be extremely useful

I'm having a similar predicament, but only because I need something that can take a 1/4" tools now and dremels are exclusively 1/8".

Was looking at the Makita die grinders which take 1/8" and 1/4" bits but for the price of one with speed control I can pick up a second hand compressor and die grinder so I'm going that route now.
