How to - power your speedometer from your abs sensor

Just done this on my s14 so thought I'd share I couldn't find a complete guide online.

This is useful if you've done a gearbox conversion, in my case a z33 gbox that doesn't have a speed sensor built in. I have removed my abs but I'm not sure if you can still use the system with functional abs.

You'll need a dakota digital sgi-5e. I mounted it in the storage compartment behind the handbrake.

    1. Connect a switched power and ground to the unit.

    2. Find the cable from your diff abs sensor that runs through by the spare wheel in the bottom of the boot. Connect the ground to "sensor gnd" and the other to "signal in"

    3. Go underneath the car and find the wires to your speed sensor on the gearbox. There will be one red and one red and yellow. Chop off the red it's not required. Extend the red and yellow and connect to "out 3" on the converter.

    4. Following the instructions, set the unit up on "H-L" mode (high to low)

    5. Go for a drive with your satnav/phone and press the + or - button until the speedometer matches up.

    Simple as that!

I ran mine off the front abs sensor and found that I could never get it to be accurate across the entire speed range.

Sounds pretty simple. Almost too simple. I may do this if I ever get around to fitting my Z33 box. Thanks for posting!

i would advise running it off the front abs sensor for all you heavy footed guys, itll give you a correct speed when the rear wheels are spinning

    A question though...
Why is only 1 side of the 2 original speedo wires being used?
Normally you get an A/C signal between these 2 wires, and polarity doesn't matter?

I'm assuming because the Vehicle Speed Sensor is hall effect and the ABS Sensor is variable reluctance?

Fitted this yesterday using the guide above. Pretty straightforward. Took a little setting up and is sometimes a little slow to react but works alright. Now matches up to GPS speedo which is close enough for me. Set to 1.65 on H-L.
