If it's bent valves then it's possibly bent the rod as well. When you get the heads off look for a piston that doesn't come up the bore as far as the others.

price up all the bits to rebuild it yourself, count on worst case scenario. then see if its worth the saving over your £2k recon engine.

is that £2k outright or exchange? as I guess the engine still has some value due to the crank not being snapped.

what is the drive in drive out repair cost?
how long do you think it would take you to swap in a the recon engine?

Well just had a quote from a very good specialist.... 7 grand drive in, drive out.... that certainly won't happen

The manuals may be very helpful - cheers mark.

I will probably get the engine out on the drive, cost it up and decide then if it's a breaker or a saver (really is too nice break, I think)

I have decided my limit for the repair is 2.5k this means the car will have cost me a total of 5 - not bad for a 2008 disco in pretty much mint condition.

Otherwise 6 back in parts seems a reasonable estimate.

I never planned on owning another but I have been reminded how nice they are inside - if I do break it I may have to do the unthinkable and put some more money into the pot to buy a runner!

Can you get the engine out without taking the body off? I know thats how all the garages do it.

well I have opened a complaint with LR customer services - It probably won't get very far but I can't believe how bad it is.....

posted the findings on the disco 3 facebook page and another 2 have suffered the same fate since I posted 24hrs ago - this is a design fault on a mega scale, looks like EVERY 2007 disco has failed following the timing belt change at a main dealer, its a eyeopener for sure!

I thought it was a recall or at least a corrective action at the service? IIRC it was something to do with the bolt bottoming out on the block and putting stress on the top of the oil pump.

Mark - would you happen to have any info about how best to get the heads off to check for damage? it looks like all the injectors etc need to come out to remove the cam covers.... feel like I spent the 2hrs on it today just unplugging wires,

Its a proper tight fit in the 'bay.... starting think I should look for a way to lift the body, I think it will probably be the easier option to replace the engine if it needs to come out - I can probably manage the heads insitu tho

Yes, injectors out, cam covers off, remove cams (they have a chain running between them and a tensioner) then heads off. Make sure you keep the cam caps in order.

Had a call from LR customer service yesterday..... A very nice lady on the phone - "let me arrange a time for Guy Salmon in Knutsford to book it in for repair and we'll sort you something nice to drive in the meantime"

Not counting my chickens until it's done, but seems LR might actually be sorting it out.

    Be nice if they do

Goodie gumdrops..... Heard from them today and.....

Will not offer assistance due to the age of vehicle, why did they not say that in the first place?

3 weeks dicking round when I could have been stripping the heads off..... Just wish I had recorded the first conversation when she said they knew about the issues and would sort it, because they now refuse to admit what was said.

Oh and a friendly chap on the disco 3 owners club felt the need to point them towards the thread I started before I knew what the issue was asking for assistance (I was straight With LR from the start and told them I bought it as a non runner) but they now think this absolves them from any responsibility when it comes to parts failing that were crap from the start.

All in all a pretty shitty experience, not that they won't fix it - the 10 calls and many broken promises for call backs and emails over the 3 weeks waiting

There's so many dishonest people in the world, I don't know how they live with themselves. Are you stripping the engine yourself now?

I will be..... Just wish they had said no from the start, that's 2 bank holiday weekends I could have been stripping it instead of waiting on false promise
