    Excessive in/out play T28

Long story short, recently I installed a T28 (journal bearing) on my ca18det which was in perfect condition, no side to side or in & out play. I fitted the turbo along with some braided lines from kinugawa which has a 1.5mm oil restrictor in the banjo bolt going to the turbo.

Come to discover only around 500 miles later (if that) that my turbo now has EXTREME in/out play but no side to side. The wheel doesn't touch the compressor housing as of yet.

Theres is also no smoke from the exhaust and the car boosts perfectly fine, however im baffled as to why this has happend..

Could someone shine some light into this mystery? It's a **** take that I'll have to rebuild/buy another turbo now!!

tend to use restrictors on ball bearing turbo's as they can get too much oil and smoke a lot
,could be the stock 280 degree thrust has been starved of oil and it's died
don't take much to kill the thrust if the boost is increased and its getting good oil flow,I've killed two in short time/mileage
could be rebuilt with a 360 degree thrust, get a kit from kinugawa

Rebuilding it is my plan, but before that I need to find out what actually killed the turbo.

Do you think it could be due to the restrictor since its a journal bearing turbo?

Yes, you should have stuck with the standard style oil feed

Yep, no need for the restriction on the journal bearing, so as said bearing has most likely died.

The unrestricted bolt? Yea should be fine, as long as it's clean.

It's not too expensive to rebuild your turbo.

Thanks guys, I'll tear it apart again and see if I can get hold of a new turbo or rebuild the current one. Will use OEM bolt

It's not massively expensive to get it rebuilt.

Around £250 for a rebuild around here, I could buy another for £150!

Rebuild it yourself it's fairly easy tbh just make sure you mark it all up well.

I've looked it up and it doesn't look too bad. Ordered a rebuild kit and will be attempting it beginning of next week!

Do you think I should have the turbo balanced, or with plenty of marking reference points I should be OK?

    Hi guys I have an update;

Spoke to Kinugawa this morning via email and they ensured me that the restrictor I have is suitable for journal bearings (not bb, as those use a 1mm restrictor) and that they haven't heard of an issue like this before from their lines.

I'll be rebuilding the turbo this week so I'll update this post if I find anything weird.

Some say you can get away without a balance if you carefully mark everything up, but on your first time are you confident?

    A balance is £50 at turborebuild.co.uk

I'm confident. I don't have the time to send it away for balancing unfortunately so I'll give it a go. Plenty of videos showing rebuilds!

They even did it on the last wheeler dealers episode
With a decent set of circlips it doesn't look too hard.

To update this, I've rebuilt the turbo and its back in the car running perfect.

Upon taking the unit apart the thrust bearing had worn pretty badly but my journal bearings were all good.

Had it balanced and cleaned up by my buddy as well for £40 so a total of £70 spent on the rebuild. He also cleaned up the compressor blades as they had just started to touch the housing and there was a little damage.

    And the finished unit...

Can't thank Lucas @ Best Turbos in Oldbury enough, my man absolutely sorted me out!
