    S14 Gearbox

    Hi All,

I'm looking for an S14 gearbox in good condition for a conversion into my resto-mod Datsun 240Z that I'm building if anyone can help?

I recently purchased an S14 gearbox through eBay however it turns out that second gear has been abused over its life and is quite knackered so looking for another gearbox. Alternatively if anyone can help with providing a second gear in good condition then I'd also be very interested as the box is otherwise solid (not sure if these are even available still through Nissan?).

    Cheers,

    Mark

What is the problem with the box, and have you opened it up to see if there's any other damage?

Brilliant thank you very much! It'll have to wait till Tuesday as it's currently still with a local gearbox specialist so not seen it myself yet. Only had a phone call about it this week. Will be seeing it Tuesday morning though.

The local shop have opened it up and suggested the box is in good condition overall (would get new bearings etc though) however there was a lot of wear to the teeth on second gear and that the box wouldn't be great in a decent road car as intended but suggested that it would be ok for a track car. That's all I've been told so far and haven't actually seen it in person....

Right, as discussed I managed to get pictures earlier today. Below are two pictures showing second gear which I' looking for a replacement, also the reverse gear which I'm hoping to find a better condition one of as well. Any chance you can help?

Did you have any luck finding anything? I'm still looking and would be grateful of any help.

ive a complete box without the housings you could have for £70. it has a worn 4th syncro but that is easy enough to change if you have a press.

worn reverse idlers like that are pretty common. its from smashing it in. or broken selector forks.

ive not been inside one of these boxes for a few years but my brain is suggesting that s14 gearboxes have sealed bearings and that Ca18 and early Sr20 180sx had open bearings inside them.

has your centre plate got the flappy trap door things on it?

im not sure how compatable bits are between the different gearsets/boxes.

Can you tell me where I need to be looking for the 'centre plate'? I've posted up the photos I have of the internals, only other images i have are of the whole box as its still at a local shop.

I presume the gearbox you have is an S14 box rather than an S13 or S15? Really am a complete novice here, just hoping to find a good set of gears.

Your last pic you posted showing the reverse idler gear, is the centre plate. You have open type bearings in it.
I have some spares, I'll have a look through and see what condition they're in.

Ok mate, I've found some bits. A reverse idler that's in better condition on the gears than yours and a 2nd gear (I think).

Only problem is they've got quite rusty. I have cleaned them up a bit and I think if they were cleaned and polished up a bit better they may go again.

You're welcome to them if you want, see what your mechanic thinks.

Camera died when taking pics of 2nd gear. I'll get some later.

Thanks dude, I’d be really grateful to see more of second gear, if it’s in good condition then it can be cleaned up. .

I went down to the shop and realistically I need second gear and the input/lay shaft with 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear fixed onto it. Have you got the lay/input shaft as well?
