lambda sensor testing
can you test a lambda sensor off the car? I need to fit a lambda sensor before I take my car to be mapped and im not sure which if any of the ones I have are knackered or not, is there a way to actually test them?
or should I just buy a new one?
if I get a new one has any one any suggestions where to shop?
its for an sr20 s14 not s14a.
or should I just not bother fitting one for when it goes to get mapped. its currently mapped not to run one but its always given terrible MPG, which is why I was tempted to chuck one in. the car is for drifiting so mainly spends most of its time getting revved.

I'd buy a new one personally, Bosch make decent sensors.
Not sure what the part no is for an S14

that was how I was thinking but then if I remember correctly the lambda is only really in use when cruising along which is something I never do. so it was a bit of a double ended sword.

If your going to the effort of getting it mapped properly you might aswell get a new sensor I ended up using a bosch universal 3 wire and reused the stock plug think it was like 50 quid

Easy to test.
You need.
Voltmeter preferably with croc clips on leads (or assistant / 4 hands - takes one to hold common probe on vice, 2 more to hold probe on connector).
Propane/Butane blowtorch. (4th hand)
Vice or other holding device.
Clamp lambda in vice.
Connect voltmeter to vice and red wire middle terminal of plug.
Heat the tip of lambda with the blue cone of the flame impinging round the tip (<2cm away from tip). When at working temperature the voltage will rise to >0.9V. Move blue cone off tip and volts drop to <0.1V. Waft blue cone over tip and check response is quick.
On car
Just unplug it and go drive. If car runs better its time to test as above.
Note
The Lambda correction is not just for <3200rpm closed loop operation. It learns an adjustment value that is used to modify the open loop high speed mixture.
