JZS14 Silvia

some updates as of late, nothing but spending and no driving lately but that's part of it!

view of the 3 inch exhaust clearance before turbo swap just to remind myself how stupid a 4 inch downpipe is again!

trying on the new manifold

i'll be honest, it's a lovely manifold and it fits the head etc fine without any work required, but, the wastegate position is pressed into my brake pipes, this manifold i understand has the port positioning for max priority/flow into the wg for boost management but it's not ideal and it was a complete nightmare to fit the v band clamp on the gate once it was in place against the spring seat pressure

306 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

made up a little boost pipe adjustment out of spare pipes (need a clean and a polish)
307 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

sorted out an oil return, a 45* an10 was perfect for this job
all hose was heat protected

now the start of the nightmare, the exhaust fab work fitting a 4 inch in, the old 6 boost manifold i had in my last forged engine setup was alot easier as the *6 runner was tighter and positioned in a different angle/place, this time the 4 inch 90* was basically touching either the *6 leg of the manifold or the base of the clutch master cylinder

excuse the welds, these were only stainless mig spot/tac welded before being taken out to the tig welders place to get done properly

I made some pie cuts out of 4 inch pipe

again excuse the welds
312 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

properly tig welded now by my mate josh at garage hobo, I dropped the exhaust pipes off at his place tack welded together

now onto positioning the flexi and working downwards

wastegate exit

317 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

original oval floor system modified at the front to accept 4 inch v band

318 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

all coolant pipes and oil pipework made up in AN lines and heat wrapped/protected, intake pipe modified to take the same K&N intake filter, sadly it isn't a 4 inch intake which i always thought looked better on a big single turbo but that's modern turbos now!

how it looks:

after a few hundred miles, my gk tech engine mounts looked like this:

321 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

sadly their warranty didn't cover it as they are sr20 mounts not 1jz, however i do understand that they can't warrant a product if it's incorrectly used

so i spoke to called locknloaded engineering who also has a 1jz s14 and he made me up some 63mm tall solid mounts (around 65-66mm tall once a piece of hose is squashed in)

then it was back to basics, i had to sort an oil leak that had been annoying me since fitting the 1jz vvti engine

323 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

sorted out a new cam seal on the exh side

while i had it in bits, i decided to also fit a new vvt pulley

324 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

primed before fitting

325 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

and a new timing belt

and a new timing cover

a new koyo rad cap as my last one's seal perished, likely from it being on when welding the top water neck

changed the oil to this:

329 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

removed the oil cooler heat exchanger

330 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

also put the sandwich plate back on for gauge sensors

inc some of these
336 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

and an oil cooler 25 row (excuse the bracket it was just for now until i make a proper one

339 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

some an lines

340 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

ordered a new down turn lower rad hose adapter, this massively helps clearance around the manifold and turbo oil drain!

added a power steering cooler

alternator relocation kit, my engine suffered the cracked alternator bracket (common jz fault)

331 by Jonny McIntosh, on Flickr

which turned into removing the 350z power steering pump and brackets as they no longer worked with the tomei kit, so i have now returned to the standard 1jz power steering pump setup
